1) Mindful Eating
What you put on your plate generally makes a difference but when you’re pregnant (or trying to get pregnant), it’s the most important. A natural pregnancy starts with a healthy and balanced diet. For the next nine months, it’s up to you to nourish both yourself and your baby for the better. You might experience morning sickness in the first trimester, so try eating small, protein-based snacks throughout the day rather than larger meals. Once you’re about halfway through your pregnancy, you should be following a more full, yet nutritious, prenatal diet—From fresh vegetables and fruits, to beans, nuts and lean, organic meats.

Processed foods are a big no-no—They not only contain unnecessary chemicals but can also lead to morning sickness and constipation. While your sugar cravings might be high, go for a healthy snack instead. When you’re preparing and storing food during this trivial time, be sure to avoid toxic plastic and Teflon. Opt for cast iron or stainless steel skillets, and glass or metal containers!
2) Stay Hydrated
Did you know? During pregnancy, a woman’s blood volume increases and her body has to supply fluid to replenish the amniotic fluid the baby is in. Uncomfortable symptoms that come with pregnancy like morning sickness and constipation can be avoided by drinking enough water—typically around a gallon per day—to make sure you and your baby are both properly hydrated.
3) Get Moving
Pregnancy is a transformative moment with lots of changes including not only your baby’s growth but your own growing body. A balance of fun physical activity and nourishing rest is key for the next nine months. Mix up your exercise routine and try hiking in nature, walking around the neighborhood (get your steps in!), exploring yoga (which can also help with breathwork) or dancing.
Throughout your pregnancy, you’ll have ups and downs, so go with your gut. Don’t push yourself too hard and do what feels right. Some form of movement will not only increase your endurance for labor and bring lots of oxygen to your baby, but will also produce endorphins, leaving you feeling great and centered.
4) Incorporate Vitamins and Herbs
Adding in key vitamins and herbs during your pregnancy can help with high blood pressure, immunity and your overall health—as well as that of your baby. From Vitamin D and Vitamin C, to cod liver oil and Chinese herbs. Acupuncture can also help support fertility and a natural pregnancy for all the steps along the way.
5) All the Feelings
The wild ride that is pregnancy can spur a wide range of emotions—From excitement and bliss, to sadness and anxiety. Whatever you’re feeling is okay. Make self-care a priority and be kind to yourself (and your baby). Making small changes to your routine can make all the difference to help you feel balanced. Try simplifying your meals, getting outside everyday, talking to your baby and even taking a birthing class. You won’t regret it!
